How to Disinfect Reusable Bags

As society grows more and more aware of the effect that single-use plastic bags can have on the environment, more and more of us are choosing to reuse carrier bags we have already purchased. This is a sensible and responsible approach, but the recent Coronavirus outbreak has heightened people’s awareness of the potential presence of germs on reusable materials.
When using and reusing bags in places where you might come into contact with high volumes of people – i.e. supermarkets – cleaning your reusable bags might become a practice to adopt. It makes sense to enure that reusable carrier bags are as clean as they can be, as they should last you a long time!
For the most common variety of reusable bags, those made out plastic and often nicknamed ‘Bags For Life’, Valley Northern recommend:
1. Turning them inside out and wiping them with a hot cloth.
2. Make sure to first spray either the bag or your cloth with a disinfectant cleaner, such as Dettol.

When disinfecting your plastic bags always make sure your hands are clean, as dealing with clean bags when your hands are dirty will only make the bags dirty again. Try having a small bottle of hand santitiser close by so that you can clean your hands instantly in between regular hand washes. Be mindful that using a disinfectant containing alcohol may remove print from your reusable bag.
Reusing carrier bags isn’t just an important step in caring for the environment, it also makes things cheaper for you as a consumer. Always make sure that you are using clean bags so that you aren’t raising the possibilities of either yourself or your family becoming ill.
