Pharmaceutical Packaging : The benefits of custom printing.

 

 

I recently asked the Valley Northern Managing Director to sum up why a pharmacy might like to have their packaging custom printed. 

“… Just think, your company name and details smiling at your customer every time they open their kitchen medicine cupboard – how’s that for long term consistent advertising!"

I don’t think I have heard custom printing summed up quite so succinctly before. And it’s a very compelling way to look at it, after all, advertisers have known for hundreds of years the value of brand recognition.

You’ll find Heinz, Persil and Fairy Liquid in the majority of homes in the UK, broadcasting their unique style of advertising 24 hours a day and 7 days a week from the confines of any kitchen cupboard, all of those brands know the value of getting their packaging right. 

And when the new generation in the family move on and stock up their own kitchens? Strangely enough they choose Heinz, Persil and Fairy Liquid … and why wouldn’t they? After all they have been subliminally bombarded with their marketing messages all their life and now they feel a sense of comfort (or a range of other psychological benefits) in knowing they’re consuming a brand they know and trust.

That’s the thing about humans, we’re creatures of habit. If something works well once, we’re likely to repeat it. (We’re also very forgetful by the way and that’s where branded packaging can help.)

A pharmacy will typically be known within a much defined catchment area (particularly one close to a GP surgery) but it would be foolish to suggest that this means automatic brand loyalty. In fact a recent study in the US suggested that 60% of people had no brand loyalty whatsoever to any pharmacy.

So, whilst Heinz is the unassailable leader in the average food cupboard, there’s a vacancy available in the average medicine cabinet that’s up for grabs.
