Winter Survival Tips

To help all of us through the winter months we have a hero amongst us.

A hero who is there to help and to guide us through these cold days. A beacon of hope.

We have our local pharmacy!

In the likely event that you, dear reader, happen to be a pharmacist, thank you.

Always with a caring smile and always with expert help and care in abundance, the pharmacy is a welcome sight in these dark days. Always with impossibly bright interior lights almost beckoning you to enter from the dark and cold street. What a sight for sore eyes a welcoming pharmacy is when you need help in these unforgiving months.

Pharmacies and the wider health care system can only do so much though. Here’s some Winter tips courtesy of Valley Northern.

1.            Try, whenever possible, to get out into the sunlight. Even if you can only do this one day a week it will help your mood and it can help you to adjust to the changing season. Wrap up warm and aim to go out at the highest sun at mid-day.

2.            Get cosy at home. Think about the lighting in your room, it can massively improve your mood. Try candles for maximum cosiness. Wear cosy and warm clothes. Spoil yourself occasionally with your favourite food.

3.            Be creative. Now’s the time to take up a hobby. Research possible activities and put some time aside to devote to it. This is a great way to forget about the weather and to improve your own self esteem – feeling proud of your creation is one of the joys of doing creative things. Why not try your dab hand at designing with our custom print design tool.  You never know, you may even start to think about all of the possibilities that you can achieve with your own bespoke bags, and how you can best promote your company!   Or, maybe you just like coming up with fantastic ideas how to improve products or other companies services. If you do – we would love to hear from you! Submit your ideas online. We really appreciate all ideas – however simple or wacky!

4.            Plan a short break. Doing something out of routine can have a dramatic effect on your mental health and well-being. You don’t have to spend lots of money on several nights away, a day trip can also do the trick.  It’s not just the time you’re away on your break, you’ll enjoy looking forward to it and you’ll enjoy remembering your trip upon your return. It’s a gift to yourself that can just keep on giving. Remember – if you are privileged enough to own one of our Hassle-Free Harry or Caring Chloe mascots, take them with you, they love a trip as well! And don’t forget to post all about it on our dedicated page

5.            Be kind to yourself. Make time to do the things that you enjoy. Even if you are only able to find a short amount of time for a personal treat this will still allow you to feel happier, more content and invigorated.

6.            Exercise and eat well. As your carb intake goes up in the cold weather try to balance that out with physical activity, it can make a huge difference to increasing your levels of positivity.

Are you even sure it’s winter?

When I was at school it was simple and clean-cut. Winter starts on 21st December and continues until 20th  March. Confusingly, the media now sometimes refer to ‘meteorological winter’ and I was bought up on ‘astronomical winter.’ For the record (and to impress your friends should this come up in conversation) astronomical seasons refer to the position of Earth's orbit in relation to the Sun, considering equinoxes and solstices. Astronomical seasons start on or around 21st March/June/September/December.

Meteorological seasons always start on 1st March/June/September/December. The difference (according to the Met Office) is ‘Meteorological seasons are instead based on the annual temperature cycle and measure the meteorological state, as well as coinciding with the calendar to determine a clear transition between the seasons.’

So, we’re either in our out of winter, dependent upon which system you’re using.
